The RMIT Bachelor of Education prepares primary teachers for the demands of twenty-first century learning and teaching. It combines hands-on experiences with leading research and engages students in a wide variety of directly relevant, professional tasks.

With additional art and design electives embedded in the degree, education at RMIT's Brunswick campus enables you to draw upon the University's expertise across the Melbourne City campus.

Features

Learning and teaching

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English.

You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Program structure

The degree consists of 5 components:

  • Professional studies provide you with knowledge and an understanding of professional responsibilities and standards in the work of educators.
  • Educational studies provide you with knowledge and an understanding of historical, theoretical and philosophical debates that underpin decision making and inform educational change.
  • Essential learnings provide you with essential pedagogy and content knowledge for literacy, numeracy, science and technology, health and physical education, the arts and humanities.
  • Professional practice offers experience in the field in a variety of settings, with the focus being to link theory with practical areas of the profession.
  • Electives for expertise are early childhood education, arts, middle years, and physical education

Industry connections

Each semester, for eight semesters, you'll have a three-week professional practice placement in a school or alternative educational settings like galleries, zoos and hospitals.

Fourth year placements are selected by students and may include rural, interstate and overseas settings.

Aside from traditional educational settings Bachelor of Education graduates have the skills, knowledge and experience to work in private enterprise, government agencies and community service organisations.

Professional recognition and accreditation

Graduates are eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching in primary teaching. Through reciprocal arrangements between registration authorities, graduates can teach nationally and overseas.

Global opportunities

You have the opportunity to undertake international student exchange programs for a semester in Canada, England, the USA, Sweden and more.

There are also opportunities for students to complete alternative practicum placements in the Cook Islands, Nepal or in remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.

Entry requirements

You must meet the University entry requirements for this type of program.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 or equivalent senior secondary school studies, or RMIT Foundation Studies program, or a recognised post secondary diploma or certificate in a relevant discipline. Applicants also need successful completion of Year 11/Foundation mathematics.

Prerequisites

Units 1 and 2–General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Units 3 and 4–Mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4–a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

Selection tasks

Form: Non-year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal History online explaining their reasons for wanting to study the program and including details of any relevant work or other experience.

Successful applicants will be required to complete a Working With Children Check prior to commencing the course.

If circumstances have interrupted or disadvantaged your access to education, RMIT offers equity access schemes that allow selection officers to give applicants extra consideration, which may improve your prospects of studying at RMIT.

Fees

Tuition fees vary according to program and are adjusted annually.

In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) your tuition fee is shared between you and the Commonwealth Government - if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Fee assistance

As a Commonwealth supported student, you may be able to either:

  • pay all or part of your student contribution up front and receive a 10% discount, or
  • defer your tuition fees through the HECS-HELP loan scheme.

Other fees

In addition to tuition fees you will also pay the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF). You may be able to defer the fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

Pathways

Relevant TAFE or higher education studies may be eligible for exemptions if appropriate. This is considered on a case-by-case basis with the program director.
