What to do when the evacuation alarm sounds

Evacuation - 2 tone alarm

On hearing the alert signal (beep, beep), become aware of an emergency affecting your area:

    • Follow the instruction given by a warden, security guard or emergency personnel.
    • Prepare to evacuate; switch off electrical appliances, close gas values and make the area safe to leave, if safe to do so.
    • Assemble the occupants at the fire exit stairs ready to evacuate.

You are not required to evacuate unless instructed to do so by the tones or an announcement is made over the PA.

On hearing the evacuation tone (whoop, whoop), becoming aware of an emergency affecting your area:

    • Follow instructions given by any warden, security or emergency personnel
    • Evacuate the building via the marked exits and stairs
    • Proceed to the safe assembly area and remain there until otherwise directed by Security, a warden or Emergency Personnel.

Evacuation - 1 tone alarm

On hearing the evacuation tone, becoming aware of an emergency affecting your area, being instructed to be ready by a warden or being instructed over the PA:

    • Follow instructions given by any warden, Security or Emergency Personnel
    • Assemble occupants under charge at the marked fire exit or stairs and evacuate the building
    • Proceed to the safe assembly area and remain there until otherwise directed by Security, a warden or Emergency Personnel.

Do not:

  • Carry on with business - this causes delays, which may put your life and those of others in danger if the emergency is not controlled.
  • Try to contact anyone to find out what is going on - this congests the telephone system and hampers control of the emergency.
  • Use lifts or escalators (unless instructed by emergency personnel)
  • Re-enter or congregate outside the building unless instructed by a warden, security or emergency personnel.
