Sustainable cities design leader visits RMIT

World renowned "sustainable cities" architect CJ Lim will visit Australia this month and give a public lecture at RMIT University.

The Malaysian-born, UK-based architect has achieved a strong international profile for his architectural design work and research projects, and most recently for projects undertaken for both the Chinese and Korean governments to develop master plans for major new city developments.

These master plans have included an emphasis on sustainability issues, including the value of keeping food production close to cities in the interests of energy efficiency and rural communities staying close to the land.

CJ Lim is Professor of Architecture and Vice-Dean International at Bartlett University College London, UK, and has held visiting professorships in many countries.

Professor Lim's free public lecture will be at RMIT's Storey Hall, Swanston Street, Melbourne, from 6 - 7.30pm on Monday, 20 August.

Professor Lim will be in Melbourne to launch a pilot project for RMIT's new Master of Urban Design program.

According to the School of Architecture and Design, which will host the innovative program, it aims to "interrogate the future of the Australian urbanism in the context of the unique challenges of city making on our island continent and the realities of rapid urban growth in Asia".

The Master's program will also seek to connect design professionals with those in planning, policy and project development to ensure a "wholistic and considered" evolution of urban centres.

Professor Lim will be running a five-week design studio with RMIT Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture students and will also be directing a three-day professional workshop that will address current discussions surrounding the growth of the Melbourne.
