Program structure
Year 1
You'll be introduced to the construction and property industries, forming the framework for the following 3 years. You will understand how buildings and assets are created, appreciating each different type and how they are acquired. You will also be taught basic construction management skills.
Year 2
Studying the construction process and technology in greater detail, you will learn how to plan, cost and schedule construction. Studies also include how buildings work and what is required to create sustainable structures. To help you become an industry leader you'll be given broader skills in areas like law, economics and leadership.
Year 3
Explore commercial construction in greater detail and gain the skills to manage complex construction projects.
Year 4
Your final year prepares you for industry with insights into the industry environment and the latest trends. The year culminates with a capstone project, enabling you to apply your skills and knowledge to a realistic simulated construction project.
The following program structure(s) is an example of what students are currently studying in this program.
Industry connections
Increasingly, employers are demanding not just graduates, but graduates with the experience and ability to contribute to their workplace. The work integrated learning program at RMIT is one very important way for graduates to gain a competitive edge in seeking employment.
We recognise the importance of students gaining hands-on experiences while studying. Therefore this program is structured to allow you to undertake part-time work in the industry while studying. This encourages you to gain first-hand industry experience and apply the theory you have learnt in the earlier years of your program.
RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice.
Career
Graduates work as:
- construction managers - responsible for site management or running entire construction projects ranging from housing through to large multi-storey buildings
- quantity surveyors - assist with cost planning, analysis, management and control of construction projects
- project managers - move beyond the construction aspects of a project and manage the entire building process from inception, through various stages of design, to completion and handover
- property developers - using developed skills in management and construction, pursue a career or start a business that incorporates all stages of property development.
Global opportunities
Students can study overseas for a semester as an exchange or Study Abroad student. Past students have studied in America and Europe.
