Chemistry
RMIT University has been recognised for its excellence in Chemical Education since 1899. Indeed, Chemistry is an enabling underpinning science providing the means to maintain technological growth yet providing the tools to make the ‘cleanest use’ of limited resources.
Whether it is nanotechnology (miniaturization), agriculture (food production), industrial chemistry (catalysis; pharmaceutical design, development and manufacture), trace element analysis (toxic residues), polymers (specialty composites) or new energy sources (solar cells), Chemistry is at the forefront in providing the necessary understanding to create new materials and functionalities.
At RMIT you will receive a thorough grounding in Chemistry with emphasis on practice in the laboratory using state-of-the-art instrumentation. In addition to becoming a skilled chemist our programs will equip you for problem solving, team work and in critical analysis skills that are advantageous in any career.
A range of options are available to study chemical sciences, from a single degree majoring in Chemistry, to the Applied Chemistry/Business Management double degree for those planning to move from the laboratory to management. There is the Applied Chemistry/Chemical Engineering double degree, for those wishing to combine studies in both science and engineering and for those interested in nanotechnology and smart materials there is the Applied Sciences/Nanotechnology double degree, majoring in Chemistry and Nanotechnology.
Major research areas include: aspects of industrial chemistry relevant to the resource sector, functional materials and nanotechnology, medicinal chemistry and environmental chemistry. The Chemistry discipline also has ties with strong international networks and collaborations with Australian and international institutions such as CSIRO, BHP Billiton and Alcoa.
