- Local students
- International students
Overview
- Program code: C6093
- Campus: City campus
- National curriculum code: 40604SA
This program will give you the practical and technical skills to work with civil engineers in the research, design and construction of infrastructure projects.
Civil and structural engineering involves the design and construction of roads, airports, railways, buildings, bridges, dams and drainage systems.
The work you'll be trained to do includes:
- using computer-aided drafting (CAD) software to produce detailed drawings, plans and designs for construction work
- doing cost estimates and preparing material specification
- liaising with construction workers and project managers
- inspecting completed works to ensure they meet specifications and regulations
- conducting laboratory and/or field testing of materials, soil and water quality.
Duration
2 years full-time or 4 years part-time
Features
Learning and teaching
You'll experience lectures, tutorials, practical/laboratory exercises, work-simulated projects, competency-based assessments, online and offline learning and balanced hands-on practice.
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English.
You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.
Program structure
Year 1
You'll focus on computer-aided drafting (CAD). A large proportion of the CAD courses are included in your first year as to give you the skills to enter employment as soon as possible.
Other core elements of the program include:
- mathematics
- structural mechanics
- materials science
- site investigation
- concrete and timber technology
- environmental issues
- computer applications
- surveying
- estimating.
Year 2
You'll focus on the design of roads, drains, sewers, and concrete/steel structures.
Complementary studies in areas like hydrology and the mechanics of structures, fluids and soils (including laboratory testing) round out your education, giving you insight to a broad spectrum of civil and structural topics.
The following program structure(s) is an example of what students are currently studying in this program.
Industry connections
You'll do an engineering project in Year 2.
You'll design a simulated project consisting of a design brief and communication strategies and demonstrating teamwork.
You'll be encouraged to seek an industry mentor to oversee your project.
RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice.
Career
As a graduate, you'll be well placed for work in both the public and private sector.
Likely positions include:
- laboratory technician
- research assistant
- construction supervisor
- CAD draftsperson working under the supervision of a professional engineer.
You'll get to attend seminars given by Melbourne consulting organisations at RMIT. You'll glean insight into their operations and be advised about job prospects.
We've previously been visited by GHD, SKM, Kingston City Council and a variety of civil contracting companies.
Professional recognition and accreditation
On graduating, you'll be eligible for membership of Engineers Australia.
Global opportunities
We commit to giving you a global passport for your working life, and in line with this, you'll have opportunities to do your engineering project with a reputable company, for at least 6 months.
