This music industry program develops your knowledge and skills in music performance, sound recording and production, and music business.
You'll examine the disciplines of the music industry through practical, theoretical and conceptual investigations.
It covers current music industry issues and practices, with optional courses available in either performance practice and presentation skills or specific business areas. Courses deal with linked concept development and fully realised projects and there is industry-based field experience.

Features
Learning and teaching
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English.
You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.
Program structure
The program is studied in a range of modes, including lectures, workshops, master classes and negotiated projects. The final semester involves an industry placement.
Year 1
Eight courses, including:
- workplace communication
- computer sound production
- business skills for the creative industries
- sound design
- design studio
- musical performance
- philosophy of popular culture.
Year 2
Eight courses, including:
- contemporary and legal issues in the music industry
- pathways into music industry practice
- the global musician
- concept development
- music style overview
- performance or business electives.
Year 3
Major project and production, an elective and practical experience: semester-long industry internship for the second half of final year.

Graduates are employed in a variety of areas leading to middle and upper management within the broader music industry.
Completion of the program offers an opportunity to move from music performance, sound production and music business into employment in the performing arts industry through industry-based projects and placement.

Program entry requirements
Prerequisites
Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4—a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.
Selection tasks
Form: Applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal History online or direct applicant statement explaining their reasons for wanting to study the Bachelor of Arts (Music Industry) and include details of any relevant work, study, performance or sound production experience.
Interview (short-listed applicants only): Details will be provided by telephone, email or mail by 30 November to applicants required to attend. Interviews will be conducted in person or over the telephone if the applicant is interstate or overseas in November/December.
Advisory letters will be sent in early December.

Fees
Tuition fees vary according to program and are adjusted annually.
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) your tuition fee is shared between you and the Commonwealth Government - if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Fee assistance
As a Commonwealth supported student, you may be able to either:
- pay all or part of your student contribution up front and receive a 10% discount, or
- defer your tuition fees through the HECS-HELP loan scheme.

Other fees
In addition to tuition fees you will also pay the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF). You may be able to defer the fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

- Advanced Diploma of Sound Production
- A Diploma or Advanced Diploma of music - practical, sound production, music business (available at other institutions) or equivalent.
