How much will it cost?

If you are going on an overseas exchange program for one or two semesters, you do not have to pay tuition fees to your host institution. You continue to pay your domestic or international students fees to RMIT. Arrangements for students on Commonwealth Supported Places (HELP) continue.

Students going as Study Abroad will have a tuition fee waiver at RMIT but will be required to pay tuition fees at their host institution.

Study Tours costs will depend on individual tours, students should speak to their Program Coordinator.

You will be responsible for other associated costs, such as:

  • Airfares
  • Visas
  • Passport
  • Travel and Health insurance
  • Accommodation
  • Living expenses: food, utilities, transport
  • Books & study materials

Please note that travel and health insurance are condition of going on an overseas program.

Costs vary depending on your destination and how long you will be on exchange. As a guide, it is recommended that you budget at least $2,000 for accommodation and living expenses for each month you will be abroad. Many of our partner institutions provide information on the cost of living in their country. It is recommended that you start planning your overseas experience at least six months before you depart.

Financial Assistance

RMIT

RMIT University provides a number of Grants to assist students who are undertaking a mobility activity that is for academic credit within their RMIT program for the following activities.

  • RMIT Student Mobility Grants to assist Melbourne based students who are undertaking various types of outbound mobility activities as part of their RMIT Program. These activities include:
    • Exchange or Study Abroad, Study Tours, RMIT approved clinical placements, Short Term programs (internships, service learning, language tours, etc).

  • John Storey Junior Memorial Scholarship
    Awarded on: academic merit; community service; extra-curricular interests; successful placement at an RMIT exchange partner; and previous international experiences.

  • The European Union Centre at RMIT is providing Mobility Travel Assistance Grants to assist Melbourne-based TAFE and undergraduate students who will be undertaking an Exchange or Study Abroad activity to an EU country as part of their RMIT program in Semester 1, 2014.

  • In some instances, colleges or schools will provide assistance for certain opportunities. Please check with your program coordinator if any additional support is available.

Federal Government

  • Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) Awards for overseas exchange students
    There are a number of scholarships available for outbound undergraduate Exchange applicants (Semester 2, 2013), applying for specific undergraduate exchange destinations in China, Finland, France, Korea, Netherlands, Philippines and Turkey. Students cannot apply directly to DIISRTE for these scholarships; the Education Abroad Office will assess each student’s exchange application and then awards these scholarships.

  • OS-HELP
    A loan scheme available for a six month study period on exchange at one of over 100 RMIT partner institutions. Your loan is added to your HELP (previously HECS) debt.

  • Centrelink
    Most students who currently receive Youth Allowance or Austudy will continue to do so while studying abroad, with the possibility of being eligible for the living away from home allowance.

Partner Institutions

  • Some countries and institutions offer scholarships to attract Australian students. Please refer to the exchange partner list on the web site and follow up with the Education Abroad Office.

External Funding

  • The Japanese Government offers very generous scholarships to students of Australian universities to come and study in Japanese universities.

    Two categories which are Research (postgraduate) and Undergraduate are open now. For more information on the scholarships, please refer to the Embassy of Japan website. The deadline is Wednesday 12 June 2013.

  • Confucius Institute Scholarship
    Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship” program to provide financial aid for students, scholars and Chinese language teachers worldwide to proceed to a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) in Chinese universities or study in such majors as Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy.   • Hamer Scholarship
    This language scholarship is for recent graduates, higher education students and researchers with specific study and/or research links to China to study in the Jiangsu Province, China

    This allows students to:
    • progress their Mandarin language skills related to their career path
    • pursue specialised language skills in specific areas such as Chinese medicine, law, teaching or engineering and other appropriate courses available in Jiangsu
    • enhance opportunities for their organisation or industry body.
