$8.35m advanced manufacturing and green-skills boost
A renewable energy training facility will be established on the roof of Building 57.

RMIT University will receive $8.35 million from the Australian Government’s Training Infrastructure Investment for Tomorrow (TIIFT).
TIIFT forms part of the Teaching and Learning Capital Fund for Vocational Education and Training.
The funds will focus on sustainability skills development to meet the needs of the emerging low-carbon economy, green building refurbishment and the establishment of a specialist conditioned laboratory on the Brunswick campus.
Professor Margaret Gardner AO, Vice-Chancellor and President, welcomed the funding and said RMIT was committed to reducing its carbon footprint and providing a safe and “green” university for students and staff.
“As Australia’s largest dual-sector university, offering vocational and tertiary programs, RMIT is addressing future manufacturing and construction industry training needs in sustainable green skills through the upgrading of capital and equipment in the advanced manufacturing precinct,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
The Federal funding complements the Victorian Government’s “Building Our Industries for the Future” investment in an advanced manufacturing precinct to be launched next month in the Carlton section of the City campus.
The $8.35 million will be applied to:
- New classrooms, computer rooms, common spaces and administration space on Level 5, Building 56.
- A new conditioned laboratory supporting textile programs in Building 512 on the Brunswick campus.
- A renewable energy training facility on the roof of Building 57.
- Installation of interactive energy performance metering and interpretive equipment for Building 55.
The project will benefit industry, students, and the wider community by providing up-to-date and technologically relevant equipment and facilities for training in the fields of advanced manufacturing, engineering, electro-technology, textile technology, product design and the introduction of the new sustainability training package.
RMIT currently trains about 3,200 students each year in the manufacturing (including textiles) and building and construction sectors.
