Research, development and industry activities

The School of Medical Sciences has been at the forefront of expansion of biomedical research at RMIT and contains within its structure several internationally recognised research groups. The multidisciplinary nature of its scientific base offers unparalleled opportunities to conduct leading edge biotechnology and biomedical research.
Our research programs involve more than sixty researchers made up of academic staff, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, support staff, honours and postgraduate students. The depth of our programs provides a wide range of opportunities for postdoctoral and postgraduate training in biomedical research.
Of a School budget of about $17 million about $2 million is spent on biomedical and biological research activities. Researchers within the School hold several prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council grants. In addition there are numerous industry-linked research programs principally in the areas of natural products and drug development.
The Biosciences building complex at RMIT’s Bundoora campus offers state-of-the-art research facilities in a multidisciplinary environment. The main complex includes specialised laboratories for our research activities, whilst emphasising shared spaces that promote a collaborative approach to science.
