Lenarcic: Memories in photo finish

(Herald Sun, 2 September 2011)

With digital technology becoming more sophisticated, photos are increasingly staying in cyberspace or on hard drives.

But shutterbugs swimming in hordes of memory cards and disks could lose their photos forever if they don’t store them properly.

RMIT business IT lecturer, John Lenarcic, said people were amassing so many photos it became a chore to back them up.

"People think 'OK I've got digital photos they will last forever', but USB sticks sometimes malfunction and research has shown CDs and DVDs don't last forever," he said.

"The biggest problem is the time taken to tag the photos in order to find what you want."
