Montague: Call to match study, jobs needs

(Australian Financial Review, 12 July 2012)

School chaplains should be replaced by career counsellors as Australia struggles to align student choice with employment demand, says a leading expert on trades careers.

RMIT University lecturer and researcher Alan Montague said many young people were being cajoled into attending university when their needs and those of the country would be better served in technical trades.

"Careers counselling has been given too low a priority in schools," he said.

"We should have professionally trained people in every school."
