Fashion students on fertile ground

Winning installation by Kasia Gorniak

Kasia Gorniak won first prize with her installation “Into the Woods!”.

For the eighth year running, RMIT University students have exhibited garments made from foliage and flowers at The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

Fashion students from RMIT’s School of Architecture and Design met the challenge of creating designs with the theme of “fairy tales from folk tales”, working with foliage and flowers and keeping their project under a $200 budget.

First prize was awarded to Kasia Gorniak for her work “Into the Woods!”.

Representing the dramatic over-the-top nature of fairytales, her installation consisted of a girl running into a forest wearing a cloak made from coconut fibre and a pink and white skirt made from daisies.

Peter Allan, a lecturer in the School of Architecture and Design who co-coordinated the competition, discovered that most students focused on the gloomy aspects of folk tales.

“This year the theme in the brief allowed reasonable scope, however they gravitated towards the darker aspect of fairy tales, which I believe is an indication of the times,” Mr Allan said.
